Special Education Teacher Middle School/High School Rita Fasching

I am the special education teacher that works with students who have Developmental Cognitive Delays in the Redwood Valley Middle and High school. We have a functional program that prepares students for life in their home, community and work environments.  I work with paraprofessionals to develop individual programs for the students in our program.

Our program combines students attending regular classes along with pull out classes in the special education area to work on academic skills as well as functional and vocational skills that will allow students to become  more independent in their home, school and community.

In the Vocational program, students are responsible for stocking the concession stands for athletic events. This includes: popping popcorn, making cookies, stocking candy and pop and making sure the concession stand is ready for the event.  Students do a variety of vocational tasks throughout the school including: recycling, shredding, filling pop machines, washing kitchen towels etc. Next school year we are taking over the Caffeine Cravers coffee  program and our students will be making coffee and  ordering supplies for this program.

One of our big projects of the year is our annual Christmas baking project-- Students find recipes, make the grocery lists, shop for items, make the selected items, they also make a recipe book and on the day of the event- they deliver the baked goods to the offices.

I have been a teacher in the Redwood Falls School District for over 20 years. I graduated from St. Cloud State with a degree in Special Education.  I work part time in an area group home. I  coordinate the Adult Life Skills program  through the  Community Education program.
