RVHS Career Exploration & Leadership Class

I'm Anne Johnson and I teach the Career Exploration & Leadership Class, an elective for Juniors and Seniors, at Redwood Valley High School.   I am also the Executive Director of Redwood Area Chamber & Tourism in Redwood Falls.

This new collaborative effort between the Redwood Area School District and Redwood Area Chamber & Tourism started in the 2017-2018 school year, to offer great opportunities for high school youth in our community.  If your business would like to get involved in our initiative, please contact me!

In this class, students will explore post-high school options through career exploration and self exploration.  Students will analyze their interests and skills while completing a variety of career inventories and research. In addition to career exploration, students will prepare a resume and cover letter, request a letter of recommendation, and practice interview skills in preparation for two practice job interviews in the community.  Students will have the opportunity to do two job shadows, matching their interests and skills, at local businesses.  Students must have their driver’s license and/or access to reliable transportation to be enrolled in this class.

Students will also learn about and strengthen leadership skills by studying the book, “The Seven Habits of Highly Effective Teens” and explore topics such as critical thinking and decision making skills, stress management, personal and workplace relationships, and goal setting.

Two Things Students must know in Careers Class:
As of August 20, 2018, the word ‘COLLEGE’ will now be defined as:

Any education, after high school, that prepares you for a career that combines your
interests and your natural abilities.
This training could be 2 hours, 2 days, 2 weeks, 2 months, 2 years,
4 years, 6 years, or more.

and

If Plan A doesn’t work, then go to Plan B.

If Plan B doesn’t work, then go to Plan C.

If Plan C doesn’t work, then go to Plan D.

If Plan D doesn’t work, then go to Plan E.

If Plan E doesn’t work, then go to Plan F.

And so forth….

Make good plans.
Today’s preparation determines
tomorrow’s achievement!

There's a GREAT Video explaining these concepts:
